ChatGPT Get cited in OpenAI's chat

ChatGPT reads Reddit constantly but cites it rarely. The signal that wins is different from the signal you think.

Ahrefs' 1.4M-prompt study showed ChatGPT pulls Reddit pages into context constantly but cites Reddit in only about 2% of answers. The real citation pool is Bing-indexed authority pages, Wikipedia, established publishers - shaped by ChatGPT's reliance on Bing's index. Most sites optimise for Google and assume ChatGPT follows. It does not. This page is the framework I use to get sites cited.

The 30-second answer: ChatGPT now uses a mix of search backends - OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI's own crawler), Bing's index, Google results in the paid tier (added mid-2025), and Shopify for commerce. Bing visibility is still important but no longer sufficient on its own. Get indexed in Bing, allow OAI-SearchBot, make content cleanly extractable, and own the topic. Ahrefs' 1.4M-prompt study showed Reddit is heavily retrieved but cited in only 1.93% of answers - it shapes context, it is not the citation lever.

// 01 - how ChatGPT sources

Where ChatGPT actually pulls its citations from.

Four signals that drive whether your site gets cited. None of them are SEO in the classic Google sense.

// 01 - Bing + more

Multi-backend search architecture

ChatGPT browsing now uses OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI's own index), Bing for general web, Google in the paid tier (added mid-2025) and Shopify for commerce. Bing is still material but no longer the single backbone. Bing Webmaster Tools verification still matters; it is one of three or four indexing surfaces ChatGPT can pull from.

// 02 - Reddit (read, not cited)

Reddit weight in context, not citation

Ahrefs' 1.4M-prompt analysis showed ChatGPT retrieves Reddit pages constantly but cites Reddit in only about 1.93% of answers. The model uses Reddit to gauge consensus and build context. That makes Reddit valuable for shaping how ChatGPT understands your category - but if you want to be the named citation, the bigger lever is authoritative web content that Bing indexes well.

// 03 - GPTBot access

GPTBot crawl access

ChatGPT-User and GPTBot are the user agents that crawl on demand. If robots.txt blocks them - by accident or by Cloudflare's default Super Bot Fight Mode - you are invisible. Most blocked sites do not know they are blocked.

// 04 - extraction

Quote-extractable structure

ChatGPT pulls direct quotes into answers. Pages structured for extraction - clear answer blocks, short paragraphs, structured Q&A - get cited more than equally authoritative pages buried in prose.

// 02 - why most sites fail

Where ChatGPT citation efforts usually break down.

On almost every site that wants ChatGPT visibility but isn't getting it, the same four problems show up. Bing-index gap, GPTBot blocks (usually accidental), zero Reddit footprint, content ChatGPT cannot lift a clean quote from.

// 01 - bot blocked

GPTBot blocked by accident

Cloudflare's default settings, an old robots.txt, or a security plugin can silently block GPTBot. The site looks fine in browsers but is invisible to ChatGPT. First diagnostic: check the bot access table.

// 02 - bing absent

Bing index missing or thin

The site ranks well in Google but is barely in Bing. ChatGPT live browsing finds nothing. Site authority on Google does not transfer to Bing automatically - separate optimisation work is needed.

// 03 - no Reddit

Zero Reddit footprint

The brand has never appeared in r/SEO, r/marketing, r/sysadmin or wherever the buyer lives. ChatGPT cites Reddit threads when answering relevant questions, and the brand is invisible to the citation pool.

// 04 - prose

Content buried in marketing prose

Pages have the right answers but they are wrapped in three paragraphs of brand voice. ChatGPT cannot extract a clean quote and skips the page in favour of a Reddit comment that says the same thing in two sentences.

// 03 - what I do

What gets a site into ChatGPT's citation pool.

Not a content factory. Four work streams that move sites into ChatGPT's citation pool.

1. Bing visibility audit + fix

Bing Webmaster Tools setup, Bing sitemap submission, Bing-specific technical SEO. The often-skipped foundation. If Bing cannot find you, ChatGPT cannot find you on live queries.

2. GPTBot access + monitoring

Confirm GPTBot and ChatGPT-User can crawl. Monitor bot logs so any future block (security plugin update, Cloudflare rule change) is caught early.

3. Reddit presence build

Genuine account history in the subreddits where your buyers live. Three substantive comments a week, real expertise, not link drops. Slow build, real citation density payoff.

4. Quote-extractable content restructure

Existing pages get a structure overhaul - clear answer blocks at the top of each section, short paragraphs ChatGPT can lift cleanly, FAQ schema where it makes sense.

// 04 - questions I get

What clients ask about ChatGPT visibility.

How does ChatGPT decide what to cite?

ChatGPT pulls from a mix of training data, the Bing search index for live queries, and recently from user memory. The citation pool when ChatGPT links out leans heavily on Reddit threads, Wikipedia, established authority sites and well-structured how-to content. Site authority matters but so does community presence in the source pool it draws from.

Does my site need to rank in Bing to appear in ChatGPT?

Yes, for live web queries that trigger ChatGPT to search. ChatGPT browsing uses the Bing index, so Bing visibility is a direct prerequisite for being cited in live answers. For training-data citations, Google ranking matters more historically because most of the open web indexed for training had strong Google signal.

How often does ChatGPT actually cite Reddit?

Less often than perception suggests. Ahrefs analysed 1.4 million ChatGPT 5.2 prompts and found Reddit pages were cited in only 1.93% of answers, despite being retrieved frequently (Reddit appeared in 67.8% of retrieved-but-not-cited pages). ChatGPT uses Reddit to understand context and gauge consensus, but it gives credit to authoritative web pages more often than to the Reddit threads it actually read.

How long does ChatGPT take to start citing a new site?

For live browsing queries, hours to days once the page is indexed by Bing. For citations in training-data-only answers, months or longer because those are tied to model training cycles, not real-time. Most practical work focuses on the live browsing surface.

Can I block ChatGPT from training on my content?

Yes, with the GPTBot user-agent in robots.txt. But blocking GPTBot also removes you from the citation pool for live browsing. Most sites should allow it. Test with the AI Bot Robots.txt Tester linked above to confirm your current setup.

Is this the same as your "How to rank in ChatGPT" article?

No. The how-to-rank-in-ChatGPT article is the free educational explainer - five levers, ordered by impact, cheat-sheet table at the top. This page is the consulting engagement: the framework I apply on the engagement (baseline, then quarterly citation tracking, then per-engine tactics). If you want to do it yourself, read the article. If you want it done with the audit and reporting layer, this page is the right place.

How is this different from a generic SEO or "AI search" agency?

Three things. One: the senior consultant does the work, not a junior with senior sign-off. Two: ChatGPT citation is treated as its own measurable channel with weekly/fortnightly sampling and named-competitor share-of-voice reporting, not bolted onto an SEO retainer. Three: pricing is transparent (£450/day day rate or monthly retainer published openly), no "request a quote" friction. The agency tax on bundling SEO + GEO retainers separately is also avoided - one programme covers both.
