ChatGPT Real signals, not folklore

How to rank in ChatGPT, actually.

The 30-second answer

To rank in ChatGPT, treat the goal as citation presence, not position one. Start with OAI-SearchBot access, Bing and search-partner index health, crawlable HTML, direct answer blocks, named-author trust, off-site mentions and listicle inclusion. The live UK SERP for this query now shows an AI Overview, Reddit, YouTube, Neil Patel, Lumen SEO, Ahrefs and several 2026 guides, so freshness and proof matter.

GPTBot access 10/10 Bing index 10/10 Content extractability 8/10 Off-site authority 7/10 Named author 7/10 Reddit (retrieval) 4/10 ChatGPT citation - factor weighting Directional. Drawn from the Ahrefs Reddit study (1.4M prompts), Ahrefs citation studies and practitioner observation. Reddit retrieves heavily but cites rarely (1.93% citation rate per Ahrefs). Bot access is binary.
Six factors plotted by relative weight. Bot access + Bing index are both binary near-10/10; Reddit is high-retrieval, low-citation.

What is known about ChatGPT citations

12%

of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot appear in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. Perplexity is the outlier at closer to one in three.

Only 12% of AI Cited URLs Rank in Google's Top 10 for the Same Prompt, Ahrefs. Published 11 August 2025. Checked 19 August 2026.

How it was measured: 15,000 prompts. This is 2025 data and has not been re-run, so treat it as directional rather than current.

25.7%

fresher is the content AI assistants cite, compared with the content ranking in organic results.

New Study: AI Assistants Prefer to Cite "Fresher" Content, Ahrefs. Published 28 July 2025, revised 27 April 2026. Checked 19 August 2026.

How it was measured: 16.975 million cited URLs across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews and organic Google. Average age of AI-cited pages was 1,064 days against 1,432 days for organic results. Published July 2025 and last revised April 2026, so it predates the 2026 shift Ahrefs measured in its own citation study.

1,432 days

is the average age of Google's top three AI Overview citations, which is the same as its organic results. The preference for fresh content does not hold for AI Overviews.

New Study: AI Assistants Prefer to Cite "Fresher" Content, Ahrefs. Published 28 July 2025, revised 27 April 2026. Checked 19 August 2026.

How it was measured: Same 17 million citation dataset. This is the counterweight to the headline freshness figure and is usually left out when that figure is quoted.

The "ChatGPT doesn't rank" misconception

The most-upvoted Reddit thread on this query argues ChatGPT does not "rank" the way Google does, so the question "how to rank in ChatGPT" is fundamentally wrong. Partly true. ChatGPT does not return an ordered list of blue links - it generates an answer and cites sources inside that answer. But the question buyers actually mean - "how do I get my brand named in ChatGPT's answer when someone asks about my category?" - is real and has real levers. Skip the semantic argument. Work the levers below.

1. Get into ChatGPT Search's crawlable source pool

OpenAI's ChatGPT Search help says there is no guaranteed placement, but to be included you should allow OAI-SearchBot and allow traffic from OpenAI's published IP addresses. That is the first check because a blocked crawler makes every content tactic irrelevant.

Bing still matters. OpenAI says ChatGPT search may use search partners, and Enterprise/Edu documentation names Bing for web results in those workspaces. Treat Bing Webmaster Tools as part of ChatGPT SEO, not a separate legacy task.

2. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User access

Three user agents matter. GPTBot is for training. OAI-SearchBot is for search. ChatGPT-User fetches URLs when a user asks ChatGPT to access a page. Blocking all three removes several access paths. Cloudflare, security plugins and old robots.txt rules can block them quietly. Test your robots.txt before rewriting anything.

3. Quote-extractable content

ChatGPT pulls short quotes into its synthesis. Pages with answers buried under three paragraphs of brand voice get skipped for cleaner sources. Add a 30-second answer block at the top of each section. Short paragraphs, clear declarative sentences, FAQ schema where it fits. The pages that get cited are the pages a human can scan in 10 seconds.

4. Named author + structural credibility

Name the author. Add a real bio with credentials. Link to professional profiles. Article and Person schema make those signals machine-readable, but the lever is the named expert, not the schema wrapper. Run the page through the AI Schema Validator to check whether the author, publisher and entity graph are connected properly.

5. Off-site authority

The current Google SERP for this query is full of YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, Neil Patel, Lumen SEO, Ahrefs and newer 2026 guides. That matters because ChatGPT and Google both see the wider web, not only your site. If the same rival is mentioned on the listicles, guides and discussions that AI systems retrieve, that rival becomes easier to recommend.

The myth to drop: "ChatGPT ranking is only on your own website." The live SERP shows the opposite. Discussions, videos, listicles and specialist guides all shape the answer layer. Your site needs the best answer, but your brand also needs to appear where the answer engines look for consensus.

The order to do the work in

Run bot access first. Then check Bing and search-partner index health. Then rewrite the page into direct answer blocks. Then fix named-author and schema clarity. Then build off-site mentions and listicle presence. Track the whole thing with a fixed prompt set so you can see whether citation share is moving.

// questions I get

More on ChatGPT citation.

Does ranking high in Google mean ranking high in ChatGPT?

Not directly. ChatGPT search can use search partners and OpenAI crawlers. Google ranking helps the wider authority picture, but you still need OAI-SearchBot access, crawlable pages, strong answers and off-site mentions.

What does OpenAI say I need for ChatGPT search inclusion?

OpenAI says there is no guaranteed top placement, but sites should allow OAI-SearchBot and allow traffic from OpenAI's published IP addresses. That makes crawler access the first check.

Does ChatGPT ranking mean position one?

No. ChatGPT does not show a classic ranking table. The practical target is being named or cited in the answer for the prompts buyers ask. Track citation presence and share of voice, not a blue-link position.

Does blocking GPTBot affect anything other than training?

Yes. ChatGPT browsing uses OAI-SearchBot for live web access. Blocking it removes you from live citation. ChatGPT-User is the agent for the chat session that fetches a URL when a user pastes it. Blocking all three removes you from ChatGPT entirely.

Should I write content specifically for ChatGPT extraction?

Write for the buyer first, then make the answer extractable. Use clear headings, short direct answers, evidence, examples and FAQ schema where the questions are real.

How do I track if I'm cited in ChatGPT?

Manual: run your priority queries through ChatGPT browser/app once a week, capture screenshots of the answers showing your brand named. Free baseline: the AI Search Visibility tool on this site. Automated tracking: Profound (enterprise), AIClicks or Otterly (mid-market and SMB). One sampling per week is enough - daily creates noise because ChatGPT outputs vary per session.
