AI Overviews answer the question inside Google. Most users never click through.
Google's AI Overviews now appear on roughly seven in ten UK informational queries (Semrush AI Search Lab and BrightEdge data, 2026). Users read the synthesised answer inside Google and click through less than half as often as before. The brands maintaining traffic are the ones cited inside the AI Overview itself. Sites that rank but are not cited see the biggest CTR drops.
The traffic reality: three independent studies converge on a 47-56% CTR drop for queries with AI Overviews. Pew Research measured 15% to 8% (47% drop) across 68,879 queries. Seer's April 2026 v3 update (53 brands, 5.47M queries) measured a 55% drop and now reports the decline is starting to level off. MailOnline reported 56%. Commercial queries are far more resilient. Brands cited inside the AIO recover some of the lost click.
The 30-second answer: Ranking still matters, but exact-query rank is no longer enough. Ahrefs' March 2026 update found roughly 38% of AI Overview citations came from URLs appearing in the first 10 SERP blocks, down from the older 76% figure. Google's AI features documentation explains why: AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, running related searches across subtopics before selecting links. The target is now topical coverage across the fan-out, not just one top-10 ranking.
May 2026 update: Google says it is improving AI Mode and AI Overviews to surface deeper links, original voices and useful websites. That lines up with the practical work: publish the original evidence, make the answer easy to quote, and cover the related questions on the same topic. A recent May 2026 arXiv study also found that nearly 30% of AIO-cited domains did not appear in first-page results for the same query, so citation tracking has to look beyond the visible SERP.
What the AIO citation engine actually looks for.
Rank coverage beats one ranking
Ranking for the original query still helps, but Google now pulls from related fan-out searches as well. The page that wins AIO is often the one that ranks, explains or provides evidence across the subtopics Google expands into. Track the parent query, the comparison query, the definition query and the proof query together.
Quote-extractable structure
The AIO engine extracts short quotes for synthesis. Pages with clear answer blocks, FAQ markup and structured short paragraphs survive extraction. Pages with the answer buried in prose get bypassed for a cleaner source.
Schema confirms what is visible
Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Product and Service schema help Google map the page, but schema has to match visible text. Treat it as extraction support, not a shortcut. The answer, author, evidence and entity relationship still need to be readable in the HTML.
E-E-A-T signal stack
Named expert author with Person schema, Organization schema with verifiable credentials, third-party citations confirming reputation. The structural authority Google weights when picking which top-10 source becomes the AIO citation.
Evidence the answer can quote cleanly
The May 2026 AIO measurement paper found unsupported claims inside some AI Overview answers, usually because the cited page did not explicitly support the generated wording. Build pages with self-contained claims, cited numbers, definitions and examples so Google has less room to paraphrase badly.
Where AIO citation efforts usually fall down.
Only optimised for the head query
The page ranks for the obvious keyword but misses the related searches Google fans out into. AIO then cites a competitor that covers the comparison, definition, pricing or evidence angle more clearly.
Answer buried in marketing prose
The page ranks top 10 but the answer is two paragraphs deep, wrapped in brand voice. AIO picks a cleaner source. Restructuring with answer-first blocks at the top of each section shifts the citation pattern.
Schema without visible answers
The page has markup but the visible copy is vague. Google can read the schema, but the citation needs a sentence it can lift and defend. Schema supports the answer; it does not replace it.
Google-Extended blocked
An old privacy-focused agency recommendation or a Cloudflare default has blocked Google-Extended. The site stays in organic search but disappears from AIO citation. Easy fix, often missed.
What gets a top-10 page cited inside AIO.
1. Topical depth on AIO-triggering queries
Identify which queries trigger AIO in your category, then map the fan-out angles around them: definition, comparison, pricing, proof, drawbacks and alternatives. A page that answers the cluster beats a page that only repeats the head term.
2. Answer-first content restructure
Each priority page gets a 30-second answer block at the top of every section. Short, quotable, fact-led. The structure AIO can extract cleanly.
3. FAQ + Article schema rollout
FAQ schema for questions the page visibly answers, Article schema with proper author and publisher chain, and Product or Service schema where relevant. The markup must match the words a user can read.
4. Citation tracking + iteration
Monthly tracking of which queries trigger AIO in your category, which brands get cited, where you sit. Quarterly refresh based on what is working.
5. Fan-out coverage on priority pages
AIO may use query fan-out, so one prompt can become several related retrieval rounds. Pages that bundle pricing, use case, comparison, drawbacks and evidence on the same URL win more of those rounds. See the four types of fan-out queries and the content shape that wins each.
6. Brand mentions on authoritative properties
Third-party mentions still matter, but the 2026 pattern is broader than backlinks. YouTube transcripts, industry publications, original research pages and practitioner interviews all give Google corroborating context. Work the entity layer in parallel with the on-page work.

What is the difference between sync and async AI Overviews?
Sync AIO loads immediately at the top of the search results. Async AIO loads progressively after the user lands on the page, often triggered by user interaction. Sync AIO citations carry more weight because users see them first. Async AIO is more common on complex or recently-fresh queries.
Do I need to rank top 10 in Google to be cited in AI Overviews?
Not always. Ahrefs' March 2026 update found that about 38% of cited URLs appeared in the first 10 SERP blocks. Ranking still matters, but not only for the original query. You need coverage across the related fan-out searches Google uses to build the answer.
How much does an AI Overview reduce my click-through rate?
Depends on the query type. Informational queries see CTR drops of 30-60%. Commercial queries see less impact - users still click to compare. Being cited inside the AIO partly offsets the drop because the citation drives some of the residual click. Sites not cited inside the AIO and not ranking number one lose the most.
Can I block AI Overviews from using my content?
Blocking Google-Extended removes you from AIO citation but not from traditional organic ranking. Some publishers do this to negotiate licensing. Most sites should not - the citation traffic, even reduced, beats invisibility.
What schema helps with AI Overview citation?
Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Product and Service schema help when they match visible content. Schema alone will not earn the citation. The page still needs crawlable text, clear answer blocks, named authorship, evidence and internal links.
What changed for AI Overview SEO in 2026?
Gemini-driven retrieval and query fan-out made the source pool wider. Google can cite a page that does not rank for the original query if it provides stronger support for a related sub-query. Optimisation now means mapping the whole question set around the user journey.
