Apple Intelligence runs on 2B+ devices. Almost no one is optimising for it yet.
Apple Intelligence is the on-device + cloud AI stack powering the redesigned Siri, Spotlight Search, Writing Tools and Mail summaries across iPhone 15 Pro and newer, M-series Macs and recent iPads. The retrieval layer mixes Apple Foundation Models with ChatGPT fallback. Most SEOs and GEO consultants are not testing their content against it. First-mover advantage on this surface is real for the next 12-18 months.
The 30-second answer: Apple Intelligence runs first on Apple Foundation Models on-device, then falls back to ChatGPT for complex queries the user authorises. Practical optimisation work: allow AppleBot and Applebot-Extended to crawl, get the ChatGPT-side basics right (because Apple Intelligence uses ChatGPT as fallback), and treat the work like the early days of voice-search optimisation - structured, conversational answer blocks. Measurement is hard because Apple does not expose a citation API.
Five surfaces, different optimisation work.
| Surface | What it does | Your lever |
|---|---|---|
| Siri (redesigned) | Conversational queries answered with on-device AI + ChatGPT fallback | Conversational query optimisation, AppleBot access, ChatGPT-fallback readiness |
| Spotlight Search | Now answers with AI-generated summaries plus traditional results | Structured page content, FAQ blocks for direct extraction |
| Writing Tools | Apple-wide writing assist - rewrites, summaries, proofread | Mostly user-facing; your content gets summarised when read |
| Mail summarisation | AI summary of long emails surfaced in Mail app preview | Email marketing structure - clear opening, scannable |
| Smart Reply | Suggested reply text in Messages and Mail | Not directly optimisable |
For consultancy and B2B content sites the two surfaces that matter most are Siri and Spotlight. Both are public-web informed (AppleBot crawls), both surface AI-generated summaries that may reference your content.
Where Apple Intelligence visibility usually breaks.
Applebot-Extended blocked
The 2024+ token for Apple Intelligence training. Many sites have it blocked by Cloudflare defaults, security plugins, or deliberate opt-out from a privacy-focused agency. Without it, Apple Intelligence cannot train on or cite your content.
Content is not voice/conversational query friendly
Siri queries are conversational - "what does an SEO consultant do" not "SEO consultant". Pages structured around keyword phrases rather than natural question forms get skipped. FAQ schema with natural-language questions matters here more than for other engines.
ChatGPT-fallback readiness is weak
Complex Siri queries fall through to ChatGPT. If your site is invisible to ChatGPT (Bing-index gap, GPTBot blocked, no extractable content), you are also invisible on the ChatGPT-fallback path inside Apple Intelligence.
No measurement, no iteration
Apple does not expose a public API for tracking Siri or Spotlight AI citations. Practitioners default to ignoring it. The fix is manual sampling - run priority queries through Siri on an iPhone yourself once a month and log what it says.
Apple Intelligence work that actually shifts citation.
1. AppleBot + Applebot-Extended access
Both crawlers allowed in robots.txt and at the CDN. Verify via the free AI Bot Robots.txt Tester. The lowest-cost, highest-impact fix.
2. Conversational query optimisation
FAQ schema with natural-language questions. Pages that answer "what does X do" not just "X services". Siri pulls the FAQ answers cleanly when phrased conversationally.
3. ChatGPT-fallback parity
Because complex Siri queries fall to ChatGPT, the ChatGPT-side work transfers. Bing index health, OAI-SearchBot access, extractable content - all carry over. The how to rank in ChatGPT guide is the checklist to complete before you treat Apple Intelligence as a separate surface.
4. Monthly Siri sampling
Manual sampling on a real iPhone is currently the only way to track Apple Intelligence citations. Run your priority buyer queries through Siri and log what surfaces. Crude but honest.
5. iOS 26 turn-on path documentation
Per Apple's official iOS guidance, Apple Intelligence is opt-in (Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → toggle on). Users on iOS 26 with compatible hardware still have to enable it explicitly. The implication for measurement: your sample-size of "users who could see your content via Apple Intelligence" is smaller than the iPhone install base, so adjust expectations and sampling cadence accordingly.
Run the Apple Intelligence test in 10 minutes.
Apple does not publish a citation API. The honest path is manual sampling. Six steps anyone with an iPhone 15 Pro or newer can run themselves.
- Confirm Apple Intelligence is on. Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri. Toggle on if it isn't already.
- Pick 5 buyer-intent queries phrased the way someone would actually ask Siri (conversational, not keyword-style). E.g. "who's the best UK SEO consultant for fintech".
- Ask each query out loud to Siri. Note whether Siri answered directly, fell back to a ChatGPT confirmation prompt, or punted to web search.
- Run the same queries through Spotlight Search (swipe down from home screen, type the query). Note the AI-generated summary and which sources surfaced.
- Run the same queries in Safari with Apple Intelligence enabled - check if the Summarise / Highlights feature pulls from your pages when they appear in results.
- Log everything in a simple spreadsheet (query, surface, brand mentioned, source URL if visible). Re-run monthly. The trend is what matters, not any single result - Apple Intelligence responses vary across sessions like every LLM-backed surface.
If you don't appear in any answer across all five queries, that's your baseline. The first month after fixing AppleBot/Applebot-Extended access typically moves the needle on Spotlight before Siri.
What clients ask about Apple Intelligence.
How does Apple Intelligence retrieve information?
Apple Intelligence uses on-device models for most queries (Apple Foundation Models) with a fallback to ChatGPT (via OpenAI partnership) for complex queries the user explicitly authorises. Siri, Spotlight Search, Mail summarisation and Writing Tools all sit on top of this stack. The retrieval layer is part Apple-internal, part ChatGPT-mediated.
What is AppleBot and should I let it crawl?
AppleBot is Apple's long-standing web crawler, used historically for Siri Suggestions and Spotlight. Applebot-Extended is the newer 2024+ token for Apple Intelligence training and Apple's own foundation models. Both should be allowed unless you have a specific reason to block (most marketing sites should not). Test in robots.txt.
Does optimising for Apple Intelligence overlap with ChatGPT?
Significantly. Because Apple Intelligence falls back to ChatGPT for complex queries, the ChatGPT optimisation work (Bing index, OAI-SearchBot access, content extractability) carries over. The Apple-specific layer is AppleBot/Applebot-Extended access plus on-device Apple Foundation Model awareness, which currently has thin public documentation.
How big is Apple Intelligence in the UK?
Apple Intelligence runs on 2B+ active Apple devices globally including iPhone 15 Pro and newer, M-series Macs, and recent iPads. UK adoption follows the device base - iPhone share in the UK is approximately 50%. Effectively this is a tier-2 AI engine reaching most professional UK buyers via their phone, with low practitioner awareness.
Is first-mover advantage real here?
Genuinely yes, more so than for any other AI engine in 2026. Most SEOs are not testing their brand against Siri or Spotlight AI summaries. Citation patterns are still settling and the consultants who build the muscle now will be the ones cited next year. The catch: measurement is harder than for ChatGPT or Perplexity because Apple does not expose a public API for citation tracking.
Run the Siri test on an iPhone.
Pick five buyer queries. Ask them out loud to Siri on an iPhone running iOS 18.1 or later. Log what it says. If you do not appear in any answer, that is the baseline. Send me the queries and I run the same test plus the AppleBot access check.
