Did Google killing FAQ rich results in May 2026 kill FAQ schema?
No. Google retired the FAQ rich-result SERP feature in May 2026 but FAQPage schema itself remains valid Schema.org markup and AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) still extract from it for answer generation. The change removed a visible SERP feature, not the underlying signal. Keep shipping FAQPage on pages where the questions and answers are real - drop it on pages where the FAQs were padding.
Does schema markup actually lift AI Overview citations?
On its own, no. The Ahrefs May 2026 controlled test on 1,885 pages found adding JSON-LD did not produce a measurable citation lift across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode or ChatGPT. Separate observational data still shows correlation - around 82% of AIO-cited pages carry schema - so schema is hygiene, not a lever. Which schema types matter most for AI search in 2026?
Article (with a complete author + publisher chain), Organization and Person (machine-readable named-author signal), FAQPage and HowTo where the content honestly fits, Product on commerce pages, and About + Mentions if you want entities surfaced for semantic engines. The shape Google's extractor cares about and the shape AI engines extract are largely the same vocabulary - the difference is that AI engines weigh structural clarity and the author chain more heavily than rich-result eligibility.
JSON-LD or Microdata in 2026?
JSON-LD. Google prefers it, AI engines extract from it more reliably, and it lives in a single script block rather than being woven through the HTML. Microdata is effectively deprecated for new work. RDFa has a narrower niche. Default to JSON-LD unless a specific edge case forces something else.
